Patient Care Activities
- Greets patients and escorts them into the exam rooms.
- Ensures the availability of x-rays, lab slips, medical records and other pertinent information so that the encounter is productive for both the patient and provider.
- Assists patients who have physical and psychological limitations with ambulation and patient care functions to ensure their comfort and dignity during the exam. May include transferring a patient from a wheelchair to exam table, undressing and dressing patients and ensuring patient is safe until provider arrives.
- Performs a wide variety of activities relevant to the clinical setting. Obtains vital signs, weight, blood pressure, pulse and temperature. May perform EKGs, phlebotomy, and assist providers.
- Performs appropriate departmental screening, lab tests and specimen collection. Implements quality control standards as required.
- Provides patients with relevant instructions for specific tests and procedures.
- Schedules follow-up tests and appointments using hospital systems.
- Arranges patient transport as needed.
- Sorts/distributes lab results daily to appropriate physician or nurse practitioner.
- May contact patients with information as directed by providers.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times, whether by phone, discussion with providers or distribution of patient information by email, fax, etc.
- Performs other support activities as requested by managers or clinical providers in order to provide for the patients needs in an optimal way.
- Attends internal or external educational or training sessions to enhance clinical competence.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program with. Certification as a Medical Assistant required.
- 1 + year’s experience preferred in a healthcare setting.
- Excellent customer service skills including active listening, problem solving, and the ability to remain calm in any emotional or stressful situation.
- Clear, effective communication skills with patients, families, physicians and staff that protect patient confidentiality and demonstrate courtesy and respect.
- Knowledge of patient scheduling in hospital systems preferred.
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to detail, strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Basic computer skills including email and office applications.
