Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, antepartum care for each trimester and postpartum expertise to enhance assessment and the development of care plans.
- Considerable knowledge of the physiology of lactation and the practical aspects of teaching geared towards assisting the mother to achieve success at breastfeeding.
- Knowledge of the practice of generalized public health nursing, including the patient and the family as the unit of care.
- Knowledge of nursing diagnoses, problem-oriented charting and identification of goals to determine whether expected client outcomes are being met.
- Knowledge of cross-cultural practices to identify potential barriers or health/social issues and access appropriate resources. (Spanish language skills helpful).
- Ability to perform initial physical assessment of newborn, infant or child in the home setting to establish a baseline and identify normal/abnormal health issues.
- Ability to teach parental behavior modification so that problems regarding sleep patterns, nutrition or behavioral issues can be changed by the parent with a rational caring approach.
- Understanding of the growth and development patterns of infancy, childhood and adolescence.
- Ability to perform health screenings using NCAST, PIPE, 4P’s Plus, CHAT and Denver Developmental Screening Tool with provided training.
- Awareness of health education geared to new pediatric and obstetrical trends which may change or influence teaching and educational handouts at clinics, classes or in the home.
- Ability to deliver care in a variety of settings, including patient’s homes, schools, etc., and to handle all physical aspects of the position.
