Main Function
As a primary health care provider working in cooperation with a licensed physician or physicians, as well as other health care personnel, the nurse practitioner assesses the physical and psychological status of residents by means of interviews, health history, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests. In accordance with the medical protocols agreed upon in advance between the nurse practitioner performing the services and the medical director and/or physician of record, the nurse practitioner evaluates test findings, makes initial medical diagnoses and initiates appropriate action to facilitate the implementation of the therapeutic plan consistent with the continuing health care needs of the resident.
Education
- Registered professional nurse with advanced preparation in a nurse practitioner program.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by New York State Education Department.
- Authorization to issue prescriptions pursuant to sections 6902 (3)(b) of the Education Law.
- Masters of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Certification by the American Nurse Association, preferred.
- Two years experience as a nurse practitioner in a practice with an emphasis on geriatrics preferred.
