JOB SUMMARY
Provides direct patient care under the delegating authority of the physician or mid-level provider following prescribed policies, procedures, and protocols. Provides care to patients across the life span as defined by the individual practice. Primary duties include assisting physicians, mid-level providers and nurses in the provision of patient care as well as providing non-clinical support for the practice. Collects and communicates patient information. Performs a variety of patient care tasks as assigned. May perform moderate or waived point of care testing per CLIA guidelines, based upon completion of initial training with appropriate documentation and on going annual competency assessment. The initial competency assessment should be done six months post training, and annually thereafter. For documentation of testing performed, see the Education/Training/Competency file for the individual employee. Promotes patient satisfaction by maximizing positive interactions with patients and their families.

ESSENTIAL JOB SPECIFICATIONS
- Education: High School diploma. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program or equivalent education &/or training.
- Medical Assistants hired after 5/15/09 must be certified as a Medical Assistant by the American Association of Medical Assistants. Medical Assistants hired before 5/15/09 but after 9/1/08 must be either certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants or registered by the American Registry of Medical Assistants. Medical Assistants hired before 9/1/08 who are not eligible for certification or membership in the registry are exempt from this requirement.
- Experience: I year general medical experience in an outpatient or physician office setting preferred.
- Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Must have the ability to input data and information into the computer system as well as via manual entries in the patient medical record. Must have the ability to perform essential job duties.
- Essential Computer Skills: Must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding in the use of personal computers and have the ability to acquire competency in the use of all necessary applications.
- Interpersonal Skills: Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and have the ability to clearly articulate thoughts. Must demonstrate an ability to interact in a positive and facilitative manner with patients, co-workers, physicians/providers, guests, vendors, and other members of the organization and community.
- Essential Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop and bend. Must have sufficient freedom of total body movement to maneuver around the facility, patients and equipment. Must be able to use proper body mechanics to lift up to 45 pounds. Requires pushing, moving and lifting of patients.
- Essential Mental Abilities: Requires high level mental abilities accompanied by short and long-term memory. Must be able to demonstrate analytical and critical thinking skills. Must be able to apply judgment and problem-solve in order to prioritize and organize work, understand, follow, and recall instructions. Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills.
- Essential Sensory Requirements: Must have the ability to see in order to assess patients, use computers/equipment and document activities. Must have the ability to hear to obtain blood pressures. Must have clear and concise speech.
- Exposure to Hazards: Exposure to blood/body fluids, communicable diseases, biohazard specimens/materials and standard office chemical/cleaning supplies.
- Hours of Work: Monday through Friday, day shifts. May require working evenings or weekends if required to meet patient care needs.
