Description
The Medical Assistant provides skillful execution of administrative, clinical and general duties as an integral supportive part of the physicians practice. Performing clinical skills are an extension of the physician’s role of assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment. Performing administrative and general skills support the operation of the practice with consideration to legal, ethical, moral and professional conduct in the performance of Medical Assisting duties.

Duties

  • Compiles necessary patient data to support the physician exam and treatment including taking medical histories and vital signs. Observes patients status and response to interventions, reviewing information with team members and giving appropriate consideration to age specific needs.
  • Contributes to the patient plan of care under the direction of the Urgent Care physician or mid-level provider. Assists with procedures and implements provider orders following policies and procedures including (but not limited to) wound care, suture removal, splinting, ear irrigations, and implement standing orders which are approved by the provider. Actively involves the patient and family in care goals and considers the unique cultural psychosocial and age associated needs/considerations of the patient.
  • Safely prepares and administers medications including oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal as ordered by the provider. May insert intravenous catheter and administer hydrating IV solution as ordered by physician after instruction and competencies are completed. Medical Assistants may not administer Intravenous medications.
  1. Narcotics may be administered IM only if the medication is reviewed and co-signed by the urgent care provider prior to and post administration.
  2. The Medical assistant will monitor all patients receiving medications for reactions or interactions post administration.
  • ACLS procedures such as Intubation and Central Line insertion are to be performed by the Urgent Care provider ONLY.
  • Evaluates the response of the patient to care provided in collaboration with team members. Reports changes in condition to the physician or mid-level provider. Evaluates the patient’s response to education. Revises care/goals to reflect changing needs of the patient based on evaluation.
  • Documentation includes and reflects objective data, appropriate interventions and responses, proper format, physician contacts, collaboration with team members. Documentation follows StatClinix guidelines, is accurate, legible and timely.
  • Medical Assistants may not perform the following ACLS procedures: Intubation,
  • Performs administrative duties such as patient registration, handling telephone calls, obtaining initial patient data and insurance information and accurate data input .
  • Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above essential functions.
  1. Follows standard precautions in the provision of patient care and implements other infection control measures as necessary.
  2. Utilizes equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations and hospital policy. Reports/removes unsafe equipment.
  3. Reports/documents unexpected occurrences involving patients and others as appropriate.
  4. Follows site specific emergency and disaster preparedness plan.
Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Medical Assisting or per AZ Statute have worked under a physician for 2000 hours as a Medical Assistant or have served in the military in a corpsman/medical function which supports the Medical Assistant job description.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology and able to use correctly
  • Demonstration of Clinical Competence through competency review.
  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
